    On my Mark 3 16V Gti there was a USB port behind the ashtray once that was removed, and into this you could plug a diagnostic tool to read any error codes.

    I've now got a 2004 (53) V6 4Motion and wonder (1) where the USB (or other interface) port may be, and (2) if anyone can recommend a good reasonably priced diagnostic tool.

    Hi MA,

    A widely used and highly recommended diagnostics tool for VW family cars is VAG-COM. This is a program that allows a Windows based PC to emulate the VAG 1551/1552 diagnostics computer.

    Essentially you will need a PC, VAG-COM installed (either shareware or having purchased a license), and a VAG-COM cable.

    There is a VAG-COM section in this forum (see https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/f...play.php?f=211) full of useful information about;
    • VW Audi forum members with VAG-COM
    • OBD2 diagnostic port locations for your car
    • How to buy/download VAG-COM
    • VAG-COM cable vendors
    • VAG-COM cable types
    • How to modify features of your car using VAG-COM

    In the case of a Golf MK4; behind the gearstick and just above the ashtray, there is a thin plastic cover. Pulling this out (from the bottom of the cover) should reveal the purple 16 pin female OBD2 port.
