I've got the same model. Had the cambelt done in december when I got the car at a local VAG specialist and he didn't say it needed it. It cost me around £500 using all VAG parts (not sure exact cost cos I had a load of other work done at the same time).

I think he put a new water pump on at the same time because they're only about 30 quid. Maybe it's a missprint. The water pump is not necessary but recommended because if it goes later on, it'll cost a fortune to get to it again.

Assuming that the fuel pump is driven off the cambelt (I'm not sure because I'm new to audi's) then theoretically if it locks up it could cause the cambelt to lock up or jump teeth, and therefore could affect cam timing resulting in the possibility of valves hitting the pistons (expensive).

But I don't know if the fuel pumps fail in this way, I haven't heard of it before. I'm sure there are any number of ways it could fail without locking and therefore doing no damage to anything else.

I don't know how much a fuel pump costs but I'd guess it's in the hundreds rather than tens of pounds.

Hopefully someone else might be able to elaborate further.

The fuel pumps don't need to be changed at the time of a cam belt change. A fuel pump tends to be a part where, if it brakes, you replace it, and you don't replace it at a schedule like a cam belt.

I will advise you to replace the cambelt a bit earlier than 160k as i had one customer who broke one at 142k, the cost was close to £2000 to overhaul the engine ! If you live close to London, i replace cambelts for the v6 tdi for £350 all in. You will get a Contitech cambelt kit(belt+ tensioner + relay roller), Contitech pump belt kit(belt + tensioner), Meyle watter pump(the heavy duty version with metal impeller), Contitech auxiliary belt(serpentine belt) and a AC belt. Parts alone cost over £270 on trade....You also get a fresh coolant fill as well and a diagnostic scan. Regards, Chris- 07789912128.
