YES YOU' VE GOT IT NOW

FIRST OF ALL ADDED SOME CAT CLEANER (IN THE HOPE OF CLEANING THE CAT)- BUT NO LUCK

CHANGED CATALYTIC CONVERTER- BUT NO LUCK

CHANGED THE LAMBDA SENSORS- BUT NO LUCK

NEW SPARK PLUGS CHANGED (BUT LATER FOUND OUT THAT THE ONE WHICH WAS A BIT DIFFICULT TO REMOVE HAD NO SPARK)

LEADS WERE CHANGED - BUT NO LUCK

FINALLY THE COIL PACK (WHERE LEADS CONNECT TO ) WAS CHANGED AND HEY PRESTO JOB SORTED, CAR WAS PERFECT.

IN ADDITION WHAT MADE MATTERS WORSE WAS THAT THE SIGNS THE CAR WAS GIVING WERE LEADING TO FALSE SUGGESTION.

I.E OIL RESIDUE ON SPARK PLUGS, DIPSTICK AND OIL TOP BEING VAGUELY COVERED IN CREAM, BLUE SMOKE WHEN STARTED CAR FROM COLD THEN NO SMOKE AT ALL ETC.

BUT CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE WHO FIGURED IT OUT.

WHY WOULD THE DIPSTICK AND OIL FILLER CAP BE COVERED WITH CREAM IF IT WAS JUST THE COIL??

DOES THIS NOT MEAN OIL AND WATER ARE MIXING SOMEWHERE??

i had a similar problem with a volvo one of the ignition coils packed up so it was only running on 2 cylinders, and because of all the unburnt fuel in the exhaust it fried the cat.

What would suprise me about this suggestion is that there is no oxygen in the exhaust system in order to facilitate a burn or flame, the fuel oxy mix is burnt in the cylinder and there should be nothing left there after, you did not say the car had a misfire as far as I can read, indicating it was running on all four..

Interestinly A3, you do have some problems with your vehicles eh
