Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this problem. I have had a knocking sound from what i thought must be a suspension component, bush etc. It is only apparent to me going around a bumpy corner. The car is only 1.5 years old and I took it to main dealer yesterday for its inspection, oil change 1st service. They have managed to reproduce the noise and have changed the n/s front suspension mount (bush?). This has failed to rectify the problem. They are sufficiently concerned about it to have had up on a ramp for the last two days, scatching heads and apparently driving it around with a chassis ear attached. They have also apparently ruled out an engine mount problem.
I would be grateful for any thoughts.

    Hi Busflyer,

Have the same model with exactly the same problem.

From the driving seat the sound is seemingly on the near side rear..but these sort of noises can be deceptive as to exactly where they emanate from.

However my own feeling, (as a very old motor engineer), is that it's a rear suspension shocker rubber (lower end), or maybe an exhaust mounting. I going to sort mine out in the next day or two and will advise further

I had a very similar experience with a series 3 Golf which I tracked down to a slightly loose exhaust mounting bracket just forward of the rear wheel.

    Regards

    Hi Busflyer/JVOB,

I have a 2006 Polo GTI with exactly the same issue. Normally at speeds under 30 MPH, whilst going round a bumpy corner (small harsh bumps rather than large bumps) with the steering between 30 - 180 degrees I get a clunk that can be felt through the steering wheel.

My car has had this from day 1 and has been back on about 15 occassions to have looked at. So far VW have replaced the steering rack twice, the anti-rollbar drop down links on both the nearside and offside twice, the wishbone and lower bushes once and the steering column.

Despite this, the noise continues and we are no further forward. In fact the dealership state that whilst they acknowledge a problem, they don't know how to resolve it, so th eissue has been escalated to Paul Willis (VW M.D) to authorise a parts replacement program until all parts are chnaged to fix the problem.......which will no doubt involve a lot of time without the car........I'll look forward to that then!

    Hi all

I have had knocking suspension on my 56plate 1.4SE TDi since it was new. Sounds like exactly the same problem as you guys had. On slight bumps on cornering at slow speeds.

I have been back to the dealers twice.
The first time they told me that there was nothing wrong and that the bushes probably needed to bed in Yeah ok then!

The second time i took it in they road tested it and acknowledged that there is a problem with it but could find nothing wrong.

They changed the top strut mounts anyway but it made no difference. I havent returned since as i feel that it is a waste of time and in fear of a similar experience to MART GTi, backwards and forwards to the dealers and getting nowhere and a car that has had every bit taken off and slung back on again.
I had that with my last new VW but thats another story!

I know this thread is quite old but i wondered if any of you came to any conclusion on this?????

I would love to get this sorted as apart from this the car is great.

    Best regards
    John

    Hi Johnparker,

I am sorry to hear of the problems you are having with your Polo. I too was left vert frustrated as, these problems aside, the car was very capable.

With regards to my problem, Paul Willis and VW Customer Care took the car for two weeks whilst I went on holiday, to investigate thoroughly. I believe it might have gone to a "VW Technical Centre" which is basically a dealership more acustomed to dealing with persistent or difficult issues.

The conclusion of their work was that some pipes (brake or similar) were installed too close to the bulkhead of the car (probably during manufacturing) at the rear of the engine, and under certain circumstances they knocked against the chassis. This caused the noise and made it travel througout the car, making it difficult to locate.

They weren't entirely sure how to correct the problem, and because of the multitude of problems I'd had with the car to date, they decided to replace the car with a brand new one and I've never heard what happened to the old one. I imagine they were going to fix it in their own time?!

My advice would be to mention the problem I had (i.e pipework too close to other components) and persevere with VW Customer Care. Make sure you document all problems, the work that's been done to date and ensure you copy all correspondence to the dealership manager when you sent it to VWCC.

I've not had any similar issues with my new (replacement) Polo GTI, just some heated mirror that weren't fitted properly.................

Good luck, if I can help anymore then write me back.

    Hi Mart

Thanks very much for your help.
Ive heared of a lot of people with what seems like this problem on other forums but ive never heared a conclusion.
I wonder what pipes exactly were knocking the body on yours and whether they ever got to the bottom of it.
I cant seem to find any reference to VWCC on the VW website

Do you have an email address for Paul Willis and VWCC.

    Thanks again
    John
