Hi all,

Im new here. I purchased my 1.6 MK4 Golf 2001 Reg around 4 months ago, it has done 86000 miles. 8000 of those are mine.

The clutch was not on the top of its game when we got the car and we estimated around 2000 miles remaining on it.

The clutch has finally gone and was slipping very badly, on top of this the car was making awful crunching noises when attempting to put it in gear and now is virtually impossible to get into gear.

My local garage have diagnosed the fault, the gearbox is completely gone and is in a very bad state. I have since read up on the internet and it seems this is a common fault in golfs similar to mine -

My understanding is that there is a known fault with badly manufactured rivets and the gearboxes need to have the 'repair kit' fittted.

The garage have suggested to find me a reconditioned gearbox, is this ok?? i am assuming i need to find one that has had this 'repair kit' fitted to it in order for the same problem to not return.

Please could anyone who knows about this provide me with some more info.

Thanks in advance,

Alex
