Hi all. I only have my golf a few weeks. I noticed that going from 4th to 5th and letting the clutch out there is a whiny noise which disappears as soon as the clutch is out fully.
When in 5th and accelerating there is no noise however lifting of the throttle will cause the whine again.
This only happens in 5th gear. All others are fine!

Anyone else experienced this or heard of it? im thinking a bearing in the gearbox is going but does not explain why there is no noise in any other gear.
    Any help appreciated.

    Yes thats the one !!!!

First started while releasing the clutch upon 5th gear, now the whine while deaccelerating.

Was going to change oil, and maybe try some gear additive ????

    Did u get urs sorted?

See my thread titled 'My gearbox is shot, after all'.

Since buying my car with 18k on the clock, my gearbox has been awful. As it happens, 5th gear is OK; it's 1st, 2nd and 3rd which are f***ed. I don't have the whine yet - although I'm only at 35k - but I have very poor gear changes in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I've been quoted £980 to get the box stripped for further investigation. See my other post for further details...

Hope you get it sorted. Good luck!

Hi guys. Its a year later and nothing has changed since original post. I figured if the gear box will need replaced i might as well wait until it is completely shot.
Ive done about 10,000 miles this year and the noise is no better or worse. I do tend to by-pass 5th gear and move from 4th to 6th. Now however the clutch has started slipping and gear changes are getting clunky.

I'm going to have to get something done soon i suppose.

I think you'll find it the clutch/flywheel and release bearing thats causing you the problems..rather than the gearbox.

The GT TDI 140 seems to be terrible with these components. just hope the replacement parts have improved...ps I got a 140 too

    Domnick,
Still do not have the gear problem sorted. Its still there and no better or worse. Im getting really worried about the clutch now. Sitting at the traffic lights the car jumps and misses all the time.

My brother had an audi A4 which was doing the same and after a re-conditioned clutch change, a brand new clutch and a new water pump it actually turned out to be a tensioner on the oil pump. Car was doing the same as mine. Noisy and jumpy when ticking over.
