'99 A6 locking madness!

AARRGGh! Help! My 2.8Q A6 has decided it wants to be locked all the time. I can now only unlock the doors for a fraction of a second before it relocks itself. The RAC gave me a potential "fix" over the phone of taking the batterys out of a remote and holding two buttons for 2 minutes; the key doesn't work now and the alarm goes off. I have a feeling I started it whilst pressing the keyfob earlier- have I reprogrammed something?
