Do you mean tuning boxes or 'remapped' EEPROM's/chips.

If you have an older non-PD (VP37 etc) type TDI, then a tuning box can give good power gains for the money.

Ideally stick with a 'named' box, from a respected company (Van Aaken and so forth)

It is most economical to buy a quality 'used' box, analogue or digital does not matter, and dont pay more than £50.

Make sure that the fueling is not being altered by the older 'fuel temp' method (pins 4 & 5?) as this can retard timing.

Most boxes now seem to use pins 2 & 3 aka Evry mod (or transistor in series) to modify perceived injection quantity.

Some boxes take many inputs and have 2 or 3 parameters which can be altered.

If you have a 98- TDI your best bet is a box to alter fueling and a box to alter boost. Some tuning boxes which combine these functions are starting to filter through.

Remapped 'chips' on ebay are a mixed bag, only a very few are half decent.

Avoid those which state that you will only notice the power increase after driving 50 miles or so, as many of these only have the timing advanced. If boost and fueling are increased, you will notice straight away.
