    Hi

I have just got hold of a rather battered 2l Petrol Passat (1994)

Does any one know what the oil operating temperature should be?

Also, does any one know how to find out which engine it has? - it is a 2E but I am interested to know if it is a 16 valve or whatever

    Cheers

    -Derek

the 2E is an 8valve. Mine is a '95 with 220k on the clock. Runs on lpg so had to get the valve seats replaced at 200k. while at it did big end shells and rings although neither were clapped out. It is a torquey engine which it is pointless to thrash, very un-sporty characteristics.
oil temp is 80 - 85 C this time of year , but I have seen 105C when towing during summer.

    Cheers for that lpg boy.

You reckon this one's good for towing then? - I have a 10' x 5' twin axle wooden trailer - very heavy which tends to rip the bowells out of older cars.

my estate has done a lot of towing trailers, not caravans, it is more stable than my B5 estate in the same conditions. It only churns out 110 or 115 h.p. so with getting on for a ton behind means a lot of reading the road as although it will hold speed on hills , if you loose the speed at the start it will not like 5th gear.
The smaller half ton un-braked trailer isnt a problem unless it has 12c.w.t. in and you want to stop in a hurry!
