My Golf 4 TDI's driver side electric window stopped working recently after it sounded as if something broke inside. I had to manually push the window up and it almost feels as if it loose, sometimes it would slide down a bit. The motor still runs but the window does not move.

A number of times before the incident, when opened the window, it sounded as if the motor slowed down (almost as if there's some obstruction) for a split second whereafter it went back to normal speed again. This "slow down" happened when the window was around half open.

A while back (on a cold morning) there was frost on the car and I remember I tried to open the window but it was stuck. I think the above "symptons" started shortly after that.

Short and sweet is that I need it fixed. I'm a bit reluctant to take it to a dealer especially after the 4 digit bill I recently got for sorting the clutch. What I want to do is to open it up and see what going on inside there. I havn't fiddled with this sort of thing before but one should be able to figure it out?

Anyone had a similar problem before? Any tips and suggestions on how to approach this?

I believe that's something to do with the plastic clips that hold the window to the mechanism snapping - the replacement parts are metal I believe.

I had mine done at my local VW dealer while it was under used car warranty so I can't offer any further help I'm afraid.

Yeah it will be the window regulator clamps have snapped you can get a repair kit from the dealer its about £36, like poster above said the new clamps are metal as opposed to plastic like the old ones, it takes about 2hrs ish to replace them be careful with the glass, there is a good guide on vwvortex.com on how to do this somewhere download and read this first it is really helpful.
