My fuel guage isn't working at all. The gauge is always at resting point (ie, completely empty). Error message on MFD is "Fuel system malfunction".

Car runs perfectly well however, just no fuel indicator.

VCDS has found this fault code in the instrument cluster:
Fuel Level Sensor (G) - Open or Short to Plus

Does anyone have a description of the pins on the back of the instrument cluster so I can check them out? I don't fancy guessing with the 32 cables that are in there!

    Car is a 2009 Audi A3.

I don't fancy taking it to the dealer - wheres the fun in that?

I wouldn't probe wires behind the cluster on a 2009 Audi A3 either. Read the actual Ohm reading of the fuel level sensor(s) with VCDS in address 17-Instruments and see if they are reasonable. If not, measure the resistance at the simple 2 wire sender circuit portion in the rear of the car....If that measures okay and the cluster doesn't...then remove it and check the wiring.

Post the complete Auto-Scan if you need further assistance. The repair data here should be helpful:

    Thanks,

VCDS measured 0 ohms for the fuel sender,
I measured the fuel sender directly and it seemed to be working ok (167 ohms),
So I took the instrument cluster out and placed a similar resistance directly across the terminals and the fuel gauge moved.
Since then it has worked fine. I can only assume the wire in the connector was a bit loose and the resistor placed it back into position.

    Result!
