Firstly hello from a newbie & apologies if this has already been covered but......... I'm looking for an A6 avant auto, around W X Y reg. Is there an easy way of telling wether a car has a 5 speed, 6 speed or a CVT gearbox just by looking at the interior pictures of the gearshift?? Some models have the "tip" shift on the left, some on the right & some poss on the right but appears to be more towards the handbrake than the dash - does that make sense? I've phoned up about a few cars that arn't local but the "vague" dealers don't seem to know themselves. So basically, is there an easy way of checking, just with a photo? Thanks.

Not sure about looking at the gear stick.

    You have the following choices:

Multitronic = CVT. There are two versions, which were fitted, some of the earlier models (up to 2002/2003) have less clutch plates and there have been problems with these (especially if gearbox oil change not performed at designated intervals). The later 7 speed units have 7 clutch plates.

Tiptronic = Automatic. These are 5 speed autos.

You should be able to get the reg number and put it into any audi parts website and get the full spec of the car, or even give an Audi dealership a call to get the service history up.

Although if you test drive it, you'll instantly know - you can't feel ANY gear changes in a multi-tronic, it should just go. If you can feel gear-changes, it's an auto or its a Multi you really want to avoid!

Apart from worrying about my MultiTronic as it hadn't had it's gearbox oil change, it's been fine. I much prefer it to an auto slush box, which by most others opinions, are jerky and take a lot of the power from the engine.

Multitronics are more sought after and will hold their values better, just beware they need to be looked after and serviced regularly. I bought a 3rd party warranty on my car just in case.

Easiest way to tell if it's a Multitronc as opposed to a Tiptronic is that the Tiptronic has a "sport" slot on the gearbox, the multitronic is in drive at it's furthest back position, the tiptronic is in drive in it's 2nd furthest back.

    2002 A6 2.5TDI Multitronic - had for 3years, 100k and never a problem.
