Claying the car removes bonded contaminants which have stuck to the paints surface over time.

The following link should explain everything. It's quite long but it's a very good read, especially if you're thinking of having a bash youself!

If you plan on having a go, I reccomend you buy the "Meguires Smooth Surface Clay Kit", as this comes with everything you'll need. It comes with 2 clay bars, a handy clay bar holder, a big microfibre polishing cloth, a bottle of detailing spray and a small bottle of wax. The kit costs around £25 from the likes of Halfords. If you haven't got any, I suggest you buy some wax aswell for when you have finished claying the car. Meguires Stage 3 Carnuba wax is brilliant. Wash the car first and rinse (no need to dry). Then clay the car. Then give it a quick wash again, dry and start the waxing. Sparkling results will follow along with paint which is silky smooth to the touch.

    Enjoy!

thanks for all your advice on carcare, opted for the meguires wax in the end, didn't need the clay as my car is only 8 months old, what a superb shine and easy to use,not as much hard work as some i've used in the past,i think i might buy the clay to use on my wifes beetle though.cheers,mike.
