I've got a 2000 GT TDi 115 Golf that seems to keep going into Limp Home Mode when motorway driving. The problem is cured by simply turning off the ignition and then restarting. I've only had the car for a month and luckily for me the car is under warranty and the guy at the garage has been very understandable and not kicked up a fuss about taking the car back to look at.

I've had a read through some of the posts on this site and loss of power on VW and Audi turbo diesels seems to be a common problem so I thought I'd add a post with the outcome from my problems.

Had a call today from the garage saying the mechanic he uses (apparently an ex Audi Master Technician) had used the diagnostic machine and changed the MAFS and the Boost Solenoid and had thought the problem had been cured. Unfortunately though upon testing the car on the motorway its back to old ways and going into Limp Home Mode and losing power. Still. rather it went funny whilst in the hands of the garage than getting it back and it going wrong on me again.

We shall see what comes up next. Has anyone else experienced anything simlar with this model Golf?

I'll keep you posted of the outcome.

    Mike.

If the MAF and N75 boost control valve have been replaced then I would think the problem lies with the turbo. Either there's a boost leak or the turbo actuator arm is sticking or the turbo vanes are clogged up with soot. Find out from the garage what the actual fault code was, that'll help make a better diagnosis

Thanks for the comments Chris. One thing I forgot to mention was the mechanic also said he noticed a vacuum hose looked a bit perished so he changed that too. I'm certainly not a mechanic and would never claim to be so I just have to go along with whatever I get told by the garage. As I said in my initial thread, all work being done is under warranty so from my point of view if it is the Turbo thats gone then I guess I get a new one I'm quite happy for these new parts to be going on at no cost to me. Hopefully I should hear back either tomorrow or Friday. I'll keep you updated. We'll see if you were right or not. Cheers.

    The code will probably be "17965 - Charge Pressure Control: Positive Deviation P1557 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent".

Thanks Crasher. I'm not actually in direct contact with the mechanic who's looking at my car. The dealer that sold me the car is keeping me updated of progress.
I'll find out hopefully by the end of the week what the problem is. I guess the dealer isn't going to be over the moon if it is a new turbo that's required. Not the cheapest of parts to replace I assume?

If it is jammed vanes, it takes about ten minuets to free them off in most cases I have come across, I did one on a Skoda Superb 130PDTDI yesterday that the customer was expecting to require a new turbo.

Ok, so the dealer has just called me. He says his mechanic is confident that he's cured the problem. When the dealer took the car back to the mechanic after it went into limp home mode again (this is after changing the mafs and the boost soleniod) the mechanic put the car back on the diagnostics and it was reading another fault code (not sure which one, sorry). He said he took off a turbo hose and found it clogged up so cleaned it out and has taken the car on a run and plugged it back in and no fault codes are showing. Does this make sense?

    Cheers

    Mike.

Fingers crossed this is it sorted.

    Hi Crasher,

I dont want to hijak this thread but my car went into limp mode the other day. I fault code read it and got the same code..

My local specialist said it will be a vacuum hose.

So I changed them all, I tried it up the same hill and it didnt go into limp mode like its done this last week although after a 10 min hard drive it did slip it limp mode...

    Any ideas?

    Ade

Have you checked this with a mityvac as shown. connected and disconneted from the vnt lever. People tend to bang on about the vnt but forget this part also fails.
