If your local garage knew what they were on about they'd have hooked your car up to vag-com and identified the fault.

You'll probably find that a sensor for your esp/traction control has gone and needs replaced. I recently had a constant light on the dash, checked it out myself with vag-com and got the lateral acceleration sensor replaced on my 4motion - cost about 100 quid for the part.

Unpleasant if it is a 2001 onwards model and the combi sensor comes up as faulty, they are £550.

    Hi,

I have a 2000 model V6. The ESP light is on most of the time and my garage confirmed the sensor is faulty. He said it was £300 for a new sensor. Is he quoting for the wrong one as it is before 2001? Any idea if I can get the sensor cheaper elsewhere? I am planning on selling the car so don't want to spend more than necessary.

That will be the G202 sensor, part number 1J0 907 657 A for 4-M’s up to chassis number wvwzzz1Jz1D176192 and these cost £381.55 from VW. I am not aware of them being available anywhere else. Make sure it is the G202 sensor that has failed, not G200, sometimes they are confused with each other.

    one more thing,

my vw specialist tells me that unless you are rally driving, it is safe to leave this fault unfixed as it is mainly used when the back end starts to slide out. do you agree?

So when you hit a patch of black ice and you are sliding helpless across the road towards a tree you will think to yourself "I wish I had replaced the sensor". ESP is widely considered to be THE singularly most important technical innovation contributing to road safety since the seat belt and ABS. It is not simply just a catch fence for driving beyond the limit of your/the cars abilities.
