    hi all,

My 2003 passat 130TDi (38k miles) shudders when accelerating, its very noticeable in 3, 4 & 5th gear. Black exhaust smoke is also visible when accelerating. I bought this vehicle from an independent dealer. The dealer replaced the Dual mass flywheel and all was ok for approximately 1 week. Not to sure if the engine vibration and black smoke are linked ? I checked the oil level and its fine.

Any ideas why the Passat is acting up like this ?

hmmmmn. If flywheel changed and it was better for a bit, very strange. I would expect they checked engine mounts before deciding to change the flywheel.
I guess an engine management problem..... which could possibly cause damage to the DMF, but not really in a week....

    hi pauloz,

apologies for not getting back sooner...to cut a long story short i believe the vibration on acceleration was initially mis-diagnosed by the independent dealer (former Renault dealer). The DMF and clutch was replaced but the issue returned soon (approx. 1 week) after. The dealer gave the car to an ex-VW mechanic who diagnosed the problem to a valve seating problem on the cylinder head, essentially the passat was "misfiring" which also lead to the black smoke emissions. The necessary (time consuming) repairs were carried out and the passat is currently running well. There was a 12 month warranty with the car so I do no know how much the repairs cost but I guess it was not cheap...

    All the best

I am having the same problems with my 2006 Pasat Diesel. It started when I was accelerating from 60 MPH to about 80 MPH on an open highway, but now it is starting to do it when I accelerate from about 35 MPH to any higher acceleration

    Hi watsonap,
Any update on your passat diesel , is it still giving trouble. Unfortunately I am not a car techie so I would not be the best person to diagnose an issue on this forum. Your 2006 Passat is the new model, will it be covered by dealer warranty ?
