I've just bought an 80 TDi which is great apart from it has a misfire. When you put your foot down it goes ok, although sometimes smokes a bit. When you stop accelerating and hold a steady speed, you get a juddering which only clears when you drop the clutch and rev the engine a bit. This can happen at any speed/revs in any gear, and it also seems to have a slight miss at idle too. The only obvious thing I've found is the small unit at the front of the cylinder head, drivers side, with 3 vacuum pipes going into it, seems to click a lot when the engine's running - is this normal?

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance....

The unit you describe sounds like the N75 valve which controls the turbo. Your car has rudimentary fault code abilities so a fault code read would be a good idea but it would need to be done buy someone with the earlier connectors, these tend to be referred to as the 2x2 plugs. The plugs are in the fuse box under the windscreen, one is black, the other white.

Cheers for that, is it normal for this unit to be clicking constantly?

Not that I remember but the 1Z is an odd early TDI engine. It is operated by the ECU so if the ECU is operating it in the wrong manner, this should be stored as a code.

Had the codes checked on my car, but there were none present! Given this, could it be more a fuel related problem? When you start the car it seems fine with revs at just under 1000rpm, once warmed up rev it up to 4000 a couple of times and when it returns to idle the revs are fluctuating between 800 and 1000. This makes me think this is maybe fuel related, probably starvation, so am going to change the fuel filter this week to try and cure the fault, fingers crossed...

1Z engines used to suffer misfires--usually caused by needle lift sensor(No3 Injector). With it idling gently tap the top of No3 injector (the one with the wire)with a spannerhead-If it gives a mis when tapped this usaully indicates a faulty injector/lift sensor. Used to be quite common on early TDI.

Try spraying WD40 on the injectors and glow plugs when the car is running( they will bubble if leaking ), I had intermitent probs with mine and it was the injector seals and the glow plugs as well as worn fuel return lines on the injectors......

    cheers Keith
