this car has finally been run in - 243k miles. a great workhorse for the family.

last year the alternator packed in on the motorway and had a new alternator fitted.A few weeks later the nappa battery seemed to blow up/discharging liquid and white powder. New bosch battery fitted by the AA.

since then all sorts of problem with the battery appearing to discharge. went back to the fitter and they said no problems with the alternator. they also said the radio unit (android) was pulling about 350 milliamps which they thought was ok. anyway had another battery fitted last week under the guarantee as teh old one would not hold its charge.

i used a circuit tester and that lit up (sometimes) when linking up the positive from the battery and the engine. so a short circuit???

last week i had the oil change and the local garage said the alternator appeared to hovering between 12. -14.3 volts so they reckon the new alternator is faulty.

    some questions:
    1) in order to test the alternator for diode problems do they have to take off the front of the car or is there a simpler procedure? what sort of cost?
    2) I have notice the drivers cill carpet is a bit damp and also my drivers seat belt is a bit damp. teh dirvers seat is not damp. the garage said they vould not find any obvious fault? teh carpet under the passenger front seat is dry.
    3) teh reversing lights are not working. bulbs and fuses are fine. they reckon teh f125 module needs replacing but hey could not source a new one as the car is obsolete. Where can I get a new one? how much os hte cost? can i put it on or does need a proper mechanic/electrician to put it on?

i don't really want to put the car down as it is comfortable and great for those 60+ miles journey

    thanks.

I have an allroad of the same age and had no end of troubles with alternators. I am on my 4th. The battery is always draining no matter what I do. In the 12 years I have owned the car it has always been the same. I can only assume that the various parasytic losses are draining it. It will last about 2-3 weeks before finally being flat enough to not start the car. Plus once every 6 months or so I find a charge from the trickle charger helps. I am using a bosch 5 year battery and I am doing 70 mile round trips to work so it should never drain but I guess it is a characteristic of the car. To many modules that stay live with the ignition off.

The F125 switch could be the end of the car, the unit it is part of went obsolete two months ago.
