I replaced the drivers side regulator a few years ago with a cheapish aftermarket part from a VAG parts specialist, one of the three motor to cable spool screws sheared on the way out so I used a similar thread/length panhead self tapper. All worked fine for a couple of years when it went again. Ive since been through three regulators all of which only last a few weeks. failure mode seems to be the cable jumping off the spool. I've now got window frame disassembly down to about 30 mins.

I'm wondering if the nylon motor gear has become worn and it causing the cable spool to either jump or twist or could it be the motor control is faulty and overwinding at the ends of the travel? I've assumed these don't need any positioning recalibration after refitting - maybe that's incorrect.

I've probably missed something obvious - any advice welcome.

    Thanks

It does seem something is possibly out of alignment. Check mounting frame of door not deformed. The window top/bottom settings are done with the switch- press and hold switch down for a couple of seconds when window reaches lowest point. Pull and hold switch up for a couple of seconds longer when it reaches top. Thats window set.

    Thanks Alan,

I'm happy the frame is all in alignment - I can easily slide the window up and down manually when out of the car and there is no wind noise which might suggest its twisting once bolted back in the door. I think I may try another motor and then make sure I set the up and down positions on another new cable - I didn't do this previously.
