VCDS shows me that from the date a small local garage in Buckinghamshire fitted a new cam-timing belt, the cam position sensor has reported the fault: 4513 - Bank 1: CMP Sensor 3 (G300) / Engine Speed Sens (G28), P0017 00 [104] - Incorrect Correlation

When my son (whose car it is) pointed this out, the garage apologised, said they didn't have the electronic kit necessary to adjust the camshaft / valve timing with absolute accuracy and gave my son a full refund.

Looking at the Haynes manual and searching Google, I get conflicting comments. Some posters said or imply it is almost essential to use the VAG VAS611007 Electronic Timing Tool for camshaft setting because the old school days of timing marks and lines just don't cut it for these (EA211) engines. Some other how-to-do-it YouTube videos don't mention the need for an Electronic Timing tool and another local garage in Essex told me they don't use such a tool.

I guess it safest to take the car to main dealer who will have VAS611007 ?

Not the EA211 Evo .5 TSI monstrosity? Yes these need the 007 and we did five of them until we encountered a problem BUT you don't need to 007 to get it to not register a code, that is the basic locking tools. The 007 is for the extremely fine tuning, went gulped at the £3k these cost and hesitated, now they are on long term backorder as every VAG specialist in the world wants one.
