I think you have to but personally never done one, one of our chaps did one a few weeks ago as they are becoming a common failure so I will ask him tomorrow.

I'm pretty sure it will be the same as my Superb.

Lay on your back with your backside out the door ( very uncomfortable ).

Undo the 2 finger screws holding a plastic sheet under the glovebox.

Once that's out of the way you can see the blower motor.

Undo a Philip's screw, lift a plastic tab & turn the whole motor unit clockwise ( could be anti-clock ) about 20 degrees & it just falls out.

After laying in a position resembling Yuri Gagarin just before launch , I managed to get the old one out but it was so tight a squeeze I do not want to risk the ruin of my new motor , the bottom part of the glove box was completely in the way and only by undoing the t15 torx screws that run along the lower part of the glovebox , was I able to release the old unit , and even then it was very difficult to drop the unit down . I can ,I think , remove/replace the glovebox but I am worried I may damage the new unit upon refitting so I am taking it to my local (non VW) garage tmrw , weather permitting ofc.

Thanks for the help , it is a pity that VW don't make easier access to modules , great engineering but over done.

Must be a different design to my Superb.
Although awkward, changed mine in about 20 mins.

Hope you get it sorted quickly.
You can't drive in this weather without a heater & blower.

Exactly , but all done now and it was impossible without the glove box removed , although I did remove the old unit with the glove box intact , it would have meant certain damage replacing the new unit the same way , the bottom of the glove box on the b7 passat covers the part of the motor housing. Changed the resistor and pollen filter same time . Thx for reply.
