Golf mk5 1.9 tdi bkc engine with the gqq gearbox
It’s had clutch and flywheel changed less than a year ago.
On cold starts it crunches when going into second, once it’s warmed up it’s fine. It’s like the engine/gearbox hasn’t slowed down enough as if you change into second very slowly then it’s fine
It is also like this in third but this is very slight and barely noticeable
I’m thinking it’s probably worn synchros but wondered if a gearbox oil change would help?
And what oil would you recommend?
Seen some posts on redline mtl, and then other posts saying only use genuine oil in the gearbox

Absolutely classic thick cold viscosity issue , choose a quality
    gearbox oil by a renowned oil specialist for G 052 171 oil which is a 70W75 .

    Redline MTL is too thick being a 75W80 and being the wrong spec at G 052 532 & G 055 532 .

My and Opie oils suggestion .

Fuchs Titan Sintofluid FE SAE 75W

    40° C & 100°C

    40.8 & 6.7 cSt

    Millers TRX Synth 75W

    28.1 & 6.1 cSt

    Red Line MTL

    50.8 & 10.4 cSt

As you can see the MTL is at least 10 centiStokes thicker even at 40°C !

    Thanks for prompt replies
I’ll probably go for the Millers stuff then
You mentioned G 052 171 oil which is a 70W75 but the Millers and Fuchs are just 75w. Would they be okay?
Sorry i don’t know much about oils especially gearbox oils

You will need just over two litres. This 2nd gear crunch has been an issue with VW gearbox’s since 1974, my own Golf 1 GTI was (before I bought it) impossible to get into second when cold so you ended up going 1st to 3rd. To deal with this we stated using Red Line MTL in 1990 together with Slick 50 gearbox treatment and this ALWAYS cures the problem IF the problem clears itself when the box gets warmer. I strongly disagree with Gazwould’s statement that MTL is not suitable as I have used in right across the VAG box range with excellent results for over 30 years. I have just rebuilt my own 2005 made 02M box for my own car and the shift from 1st to second is beautifully smooth as low down as minus 5 so far and that is filled with Red Line MTL, with Slick 50. When you buy American packed products like Red Line, they are in Quarts which is just under a litre.

Red Line Synthetic Oil. MTL 75W80 GL-4 Gear Oil

Viscosity is a massive player here .

Thinner when cold is the Daddy .

Got to give it to them Red Line give it the bumf on the packaging , they say exactly the same for the Red Line MT90 I've got in the S14's box , and guess what...

That's notchy in 2nd till warmed up too !

    Red Line MTL - isn't G 052 171 , VW don't spec it , I don't either and neither would Opie Oils , contact them

    VW Gear Oil - G 052 171 (TL 521 71)

It's a similar situation of recommendation of... we have summer tyres and we have winter tyres and much now in between , I'm buggered if I'm ever going to fit rain tyres.....

MT 90 is too thick for a 02M but works in other applications. It may be bumf but the point is, MTL works, proven, over and over again for over 30 years.

It's not the spec nor the viscosity .

G 052 171 isn't some new fangled gearbox oil , it's been about for some time in the 8L A3 S3 , tried and tested...

Slick Rick 50 was bad enough in engine oil , it clogged up oil filters !
