    Hi,

I have a 2009 Jetta TDI 2.0, and I just recently replaced the Hex key that drives the oil pump because I was getting no oil pressure. As part of the job I decided to remove the balance shaft in order to inspect it. I have the gear driven balance shaft (please see picture below) that connects directly to the crank shaft. I'm ready to finish the job but before I do that I would like to verify if when I bolt the balance shaft back to the engine block, do I need to time it? or I cans just bolt it right up? This is my first post so thank you in advance for the help.

    You need the positioning block

If you remove the relay gear, it MUST be replaced as the lash is set by a surface coating, reusing the gear can rip the crank and balancer gears to shreads

As Gaz implied, just replacing the hex key won't last very long

Thankyou, I just ordered a new pump and the position block as shown in your picture. I did not removed any of the gears I just dismounted it from the engine to check for damage. Definitely want to the job right so if there is anything I need to watch out for please let me know. I've seen videos where people just take the balance shaft off the engine and slap it back in. Does not seem right to me, but I rather double check and get as much help as possible.

In my experience the wear is inside the balancer
