Since the temperature has dropped over the last few weeks, I've noticed what I can best describe as an intermittent worn-bearing grumble type of noise after start. It's always on the very first start of the day on the very coldest of mornings (and not always then!), and just lasts maybe 10 seconds meaning you don't get a lot of chance to pinpoint it before it disappears, and it isn't always constant during that 10 second period either. The blower fan has already been ruled out.

It did it yesterday morning, and during one of its quiet spots during that 10 second period, it seemed I could get it to come on by turning the steering wheel just a little - suggesting it might be the power steering pump. But in the time it took me to pull the bonnet catch and get the bonnet open, it had gone quiet. When I read about PAS pump failures, they don't tend to be symptoms like this.

Golf is a 53 plate with close to 70K on the clock. The car is parked nose down a sloping drive and I've just checked the PAS fluid level and it's still just above the minimum mark in spite of the slope.

Any thoughts or similar experiences? If it is the pump on its way, I see there are loads of unbranded copies on ebay around £40 which I'd be reluctant to touch, so are there any other good OEM quality ones somewhere between those and Bosch (which tend to be around £200?)

    Thanks!

To me I would say it is more like a noisy secondary air pump, the Golf 4 PAS hydraulic system is by ZF and extraordinarily reliable.

Thanks for your reply. Its on the original alternator so I guess it's possible the clutch pulley is causing a problem - but I just didn't equate that to what I was hearing. At least that's something I should be able to check easily.....

Thanks. It's a thought - but if I'm right about being able to get the fault on by turning the steering wheel (I'd want to check another couple of times to make sure it wasn't just a coincidence), that would surely rule the air pump out wouldn't it? It would be a damn sight easier to diagnose if it did it every time, but its been fine since I posted.

That could be the belt tensioner. The BFQ alternator is not always fitted with a one way clutch pulley and like my Octavia 1 (same car under the skin) sometimes first thing it rattles and turning the steering makes it worse as it puts extra load on the PAS pump. Mine did not do this until a few weeks ago when I fitted a brand new genuine ZF PS pump so now I have bought a suitable alternator pulley and will fit this when I get time. Mind you, it didn't do it this morning. I changed the pump because I was also fitting a brand new genuine ZF rack and wanted the system spotless. Your pump MAY be KYB as this was often used instead of ZF in Golf 4 production 2002 onwards but again these are very reliable.

You were right about the clutch pulley Crasher - it's just a conventional solid pulley when I've had a proper look at it. Belt looks a bit shiny under the flash of the camera (probably never been changed yet, so perhaps ought to be) but even if it was slipping, I'm not sure it would make the sort of noise I heard.

The car behaved on start this morning. I've had a spanner on the tensioner just now and it moves smoothly and quietly without any play at the moment - so I'll likely repeat the test when it's cold and see if I can feel anything odd in the way it moves, and turn the alternator etc. by hand whilst I'm at it. Taking your idea to its logical conclusion, I guess it's possible loading up the PAS could expose a bearing problem on either alternator or air-con compressor too?

When you get chance, start it with the bonnet open and see if the tensioner dances around. I have just put a modern alternator poly V belt drive on an 88 Audi Coupe 5 cylinder engine and as I failed to work out a way of providing automatic tensioning I have used one of these new fancy stretch belts and converted the alternator to a free wheel pulley to reduce any chattering and I will do my Octavia 1.8T at some point.
