Hi Iv got a problem with my mk5 golf 2.0l. The engine has really started shaking as though it’s got a misfire . I got it put on the diagnostic machine which told me a problem on cylinder 2 also heater plugs as well. Iv changed round the injectors to test if the issue would swap on to another cylinder and it didn’t. The injectors are fine. What I’m wondering is it possible that if the glow plugs are no good. Will that cause a misfire. Iv not changed them as I’m thinking it could be a compression problem on cylinder 2 instead. Should I try the glow plugs before I possibly put a new engine in. Please help thanks

Bad glowplugs are unlikely to cause serious running problems, even at very low ambient temps. First thing i would check is the tandem pump for leaks. The tandem pump has engine oil and diesel fuel in pretty close proximity - with obvious consequences if a seal or gasket fails. To check: open the fuel filter, and if there is any sign of engine oil contamination of the fuel in there, you have a leak in the tandem pump (usually the main gasket where the pump is bolted to the cylinder head). Engine oil-contaminated fuel will cause all manner of ignition and idling issues.

If the tandem pump is ok, and if as you say the problem does not migrate with re-siting of the injectors, then the cylinder itself must be investigated: either for valve train issues, or for something lower down the cylinder.

    Is the engine noisy?

The fault could be with the wiring harness which you can’t swap over.
