Hi all, I have a 2006/7 b7 s4 4.2 v8 with 6 speed auto with sport mode and paddle shift.A couple of days ago I suddenly got the large red thermometer on the centre dash with the word coolant underneath, looked instantly to the temperature gauge which jumped from 90 to max and straight back to 90 in a second.
Knowing that I had checked levels and tyre pressures etc the day before I assumed there was a sensor issue, but whilst thinking that, the transmission changed down from 5 to 4 then 3 in a heartbeat and back up to 4, now this was about 6.30 a.m and still dark and I was only about a mile from work so I carried on .
Got to work with no more weird gear changes, popped the bonnet, coolant level spot on, no steam or excessive heat just normal smooth running v8.
Drove home in the evening expecting some kind of drama, but nothing, all normal and lovely.
Thinking there must have been an electronic fart attack or sensor issue, then further investigation will be required.
Went to the car this morning , checked levels, all good and spot on, drove off to get petrol but after about three miles, big red thermometer, beeping but no alteration on temp gauge, then sudden down change from 5 to 3 .
Gently drove about 2 miles, transmission normal, thermo sign still on centre dash, normal 90 on temp gauge which had not moved this time, well not that I had noticed.
Got to garage ,refuelled, set off for home about 5 miles away.
Everything seemed normal so decided to give her a bit of thrash to see if the tranny fault might show itself in a different way, nothing, so pulled up to a stop and nailed her from standstill, fine, stopped again and nailed from rest in sport mode, nothing she took off like a bullet changing as and when you would expect, no funny gear change, no funny temperature gauge or coolant warnings.
WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON HERE
    ANY IDEAS PLEASE
    Stuart

It looks like the ECU thinks the engine is overheating, when you have more or less proved it isn't.

I would check the plug connector to the coolant temperature sensor & make sure the contacts are clean & the connector pushed on securely.

Then if still a problem, change the sensor.

Might be worth getting a VCDS scan done as well.

Any idea where the sensor is located on the v8 and how easy it is to reach phill

Also do you have a theory as to why the transmission issue may be connected

I'm assuming this is something like your engine :-

Part No 9 looks like it is the main coolant temperature sensor, appears easy to change, but I don't know what is located around it.
Part No 10 is also a temperature sensor, but isn't in the parts list, just shown on the diagram.

    Regarding the gearbox changing down.
The ECU thinks the engine is overheating, so changes the gearbox down to increase engine revs which will increase coolant flow in the engine & help cool it down.

Thanks for the reply mate, regarding the change down, is that you theory or a known fact, because to my way of thinking, increasing revs makes the engine work harder and therefore cause the temperature to rise

    Hi Steve, thanks for looking.
I have not got access to code reader at this time, but would you have any off the cuff theory.
I am of the opinion that some sensors are having a fight, probably coolant temp, but would like your opinion regarding the transmission.
Do you think the two issues are just cautionary and that there is nothing wrong in the box, as it has only shown the downchange at the exact moment that the coolant temp warning shows.
Just to reiterate, the coolant level is spot on and she is not overheating, and the transmission works perfectly in all modes when the coolant warning is not present.
My pm sent to you directly does not seem to be sending

If the engine says it is overheating it can force CAN BUS connected systems to help stop damage, if the sensor is talking ******** then connected systems will react incorrectly.

Hi all, started the car today for the first time since last post.
Instantly the coolant warning was there again, but this time the cooling fans were on at flat out, still suggesting the car was overheating when it was in fact stone cold.Took the car out a couple of hours later, same thing, transmission not poncing about this time though.
I am very inclined to suspect the coolant temp sensor is the culprit, how many are on this engine, where are they and which one is likely to be the troubled item
    Many thanks
