Tyres - speed rating Y

The label on the drivers door tells me my tyre size of 228/40/R18/92Y (Y=speed rating)
A speed rating of W is in excess of the maximum speed the A3 2.0 TDI 184PS sport back can do.
Costco tell me they won't fit anything other than a Y. W are cheaper. I thought W would suffice.

What are the legal aspects of this?

There is nothing in the Audi manual as to which load rating (92) or speed rating (Y) to adopt

I get where you are coming from but I wouldn’t be doing it to save a few quid.
It’s like a lot of things in life - everything is fine until something goes wrong: which in this case could mean you wouldn’t be insured and legally you have the wrong tyres fitted for the vehicle (contradiction and use)
