    Hi

I found this guide on VWwatercooled Australia....

DIY: How to repair a VW MK5 door lock module

Though it might be useful for this forum too....

Tried giving it a go myself but haven’t had any success.

I know it makes more sense just to buy genuine but they are just too expensive.....and the aftermarket ones I’ve heard aren’t that great especially off that well know auction website!

Was hoping for some advice as to why I can’t get them to work.

It’s making noises and the red lever does move but sometimes it get stuck in one position and won’t return.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

I replaced a rear door module a few months ago with one from ebay and it works fine.
I would have no problem doing it again, they're very affordable.
I did look into used parts from scrap vehicles but chose against it (as their age puts them in the potential fail zone).

Fair enough think I may have to! Seems to have made the problem worse taking it apart! Almost couldn’t get the door open at all once I got it back together. Thought it was deadlocked forever but managed to open it from the interior handle after frantically turning central locking on and off , pulling at the handle and she eventually opened up.

Any suggestions for a decent door lock that isn’t from that auction site??

I went with genuine item on eBay from a car being dismantled. Cheap, and working absolutely fine a year later on.

    Thanks for your reply.

I shall take a look and see what I can find at the breakers yard / online.

Just interested to know what actually fails on these door locks?

The motors both worked fine when I put a 9v battery across them.....all micro switches had continuity on the outer pins and went off when switch depressed...

What else could it be? Circuit board issue? Wiring?

We will only fit new genuine from TPS, then when one jams in warranty (we have had this on a Golf 6 and A4) it is the main dealers problem not mine. Take care though even then, twice now we have been supplied an old but cleaned up faulty unit by TPS that a trade customer has sent back for a refund, the first time on a traders Golf 5 GTI really had me scratching my head until I sussed it.

No worries thanks for the advice.

To be honest I’m still scratching my head why it’s not working correctly.

I had the unit open to see how the inner workings operate and the motor for the lock/ unlock doesn’t appear to always work.

Tested all the micro switches which have continuity and operate as one would expect.

Attempted to find bad solder joints but couldn’t see any but I know these can be very subtle so may have missed something on the printer circuit board.

Now starting to suspect dodgy wiring to the lock unit.

    Door jam area looked ok.....

Need to check from window control unit to lock to see if anything not right.

That’s an early UK Golf 5, built 03-03-04. The door lock unit is faulty, plain and simple. It is controlled by the window lifter control unit which itself is CAN BUS commanded so a wiring fault between the lifter unit and the lock unit is unlikely.

Thanks for the reply Crasher I shall get a replacement.

Can you explain a bit more my what you mean by the CAN BUS and why it can’t be a wiring issue? This is communication system the vehicle uses?

The window on the passenger side does go on the fritz sometimes.....you touch the window button and it goes all the way down when you want it go up and visa versa....not sure why it does this or has any relation to what is happening with the door lock.
