Hoping to tap into some VW TDI wisdom here please!

When the engine is hot, and not before, getting up to 4k - 4.5k revs produces a significant black cloud, it can be quite prolonged up hill. I've done this ~6 times now in 1st gear, in 2nd it does happen but the 'limp mode' kicks in if sustained. Is this clearing out turbo carbon gunk, or some nefarious oil-buring which won't end well if i keep doing it?
    Context:

    • 58 plate 140 TDI Touran, 100k mileage
    • Under sustained strain, e.g. 70mph motorway, Limp mode occurs (with no engine light), resets on ignition. P0234 code read.
    • Repeated high-rev efforts after rest results in engine light on dash. P0234 code read.
    • Engine light disappears after codes read, or even with just enough usual driving (say 3+ medium journeys).
    • Diesel cleaner product added, 1,000 miles no change. MAP sensor replaced, no change.
    • 'Hydrogen, Oxygen' Engine Carbon Clean - Home -The Ultimate 30 Minute Engine Detox performed. Possible smoother engine at idling. No change to above... other than the smoking at high revs (but i didn't necessarily try it before).

This has occurred over about 12 months now and 2 garages visited both said 'new turbo needed'. I'm happy at 2-3 spanners in haynes manual work but am trying to avoid paying £1k for a garage to fit a refurbed turbo OR getting a garage to drop the engine out so i can do the turbo dismantle and clean myself. The engine performance before limp kicks in is 100% good and, i feel, the condition is getting better rather than worse i.e. 75mph on the motorway can be sustained now. I would live with it as the family second car but we only need one car these days so i'd like to sell it.

Could the carbonisation be getting better by blasting out smoke at 4,500 revs or am i delusional?
...our other car is a mondeo tdci and the blasting out has proven to be essential to engine/turbo function maintenance.

    chepstow / bristol area.

Is that a BKD engine then (on passenger door pillar if you aren't sure)?

Turbo off and on was a fairly easy job for me on ramps. It benefited from a good set of things like 1/4" and 3/8" ratchet, flexible shaft 1/4" driver, deep sockets, Torx and spline bits, etc.

I got a new Mellet turbo from Darkside which has been great for the last year or so. Just remembered I did a bit of a write up, so I'll direct you there: Successful turbo change on 2.0 TDI BKD Touran

16618 (P0234) - Boost Pressure Regulation: Limit Exceeded (Overboost Condition)

It is over boosting and this is likely to be carbon build up inside the turbo.

What remedies are there other than a strip and clean?

We have two cars with them. One was fixed by me starting to use it for my thrice weekly 80 mile commute on motorway. The other didn't respond to that, hence new turbo. I had been thinking of cleaning it up, but was pleased I had a new one as old one had damage to the exhaust side turbine blades when I opened it up. No idea what went through it to do that...

Pump it full of oven cleaner but that can cause turbine shaft piston ring corrosion and cause subsequent oil control failure.

Ok thanks, so it's possible hard driving will remedy it. I really want to sell it as we don't need a second car but feel like I'm stuck with it as can't bear to part with the cash to renew the turbo. I'll get another quote and set a date for clear out success or give up.

I can't imagine it freeing off with an Italian tune. The cheap alternative is to take it off, dismantle the exhaust housing and clean it up with a wire wheel which is what we used to do in the early days before there was a turbo rebuild company locally but the BKD is a tempremental unit, how mechanically inclined are you?

Ok hmm, I'm partially mechanically minded and can't get the car in the garage at home without a lot of faff so don't think the wire wheel is for me.
