Driveshaft bearing disintegrated, Mk6 1.4 TSI 122

Hi,

Appreciate any advice anyone can give. Gearbox (6spd manual) developed a whine, which got progressively worse over time (100k miles). Took box off and found this, surprised it was still running without seizing up.

Does anyone have an opinion on whether this can be rebuilt with new bearings, or will it have damaged the casing? Trying to weigh up whether to try and get it rebuilt or source a used box from salvage.

That's the diff bearings, it should be OK to rebuild. I am just doing my diff bearings on a "guaranteed, low mileage" used gearbox I bought to do a six speed conversion. I thought I would take a gamble on fitting it without a rebuild so I had to take it out again... used boxes are often a disaster and I won't do it on customers cars. The bearing kit just turned up from Hungary a few minutes ago.

Our 2003 manual gearbox makes a couple of whirry noises. I'd thought about opening it up and maybe replacing a few bearings. Are they reasonably easy to do, or best left to someone who's done it before?

They are easy enough to do IF you have the bearing pullers and extractors plus a decent dial gauge, THE most important part is setting all the various bearing pre loads and this takes time and patience. Also the bearings are not cheap, I bought all my 02M bearings from Rolling in Hungary but those and the shims plus goo and seals still came to £300. I do not trust gearbox rebuild people, you get them quoting £700 ish when a VAG recon is £4K so the realistic truth lies somewhere in between.
