Hi. I have a MK 7 Golf at the moment and thinking of getting the MK 8. I went for test drive in a Style 1.5 etsi dsg with standard 17" wheels a few weeks ago and liked the car very much but I noticed that the tyre noise was very much more pronounced than on my MK 7 Golf which has 16" wheels. I didn't think the next size wheel up would make such a big difference in noise or is this a characteristic of the car? Anyone else noticed this? Thanks

Did you have a look what tyres were on there, and have you tried driving on the same roads in current car? Surface, surrounding houses, etc all make a big difference to apparent sound.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't make a note of the tyres, wish I had, but I drove along the same road as in my Golf. I just wondered if anyone else has noticed this.

Could be the specific tyres it had or they've cut back on the panel damping on the Mk8 to save weight .

Can’t say I’ve noticed excess tyre noise in our 1.5 DSG eTSI. In fact I would say it’s pretty refined.

I was concerned about a possible loss in ride quality going from the 16s in our old Golf Mk7 to the 17s in the Mk8, but again, no problems on that score - if anything a slight improvement.

Thank you Gazwould and Handydave, not sure why this one was much noisier than mine. Maybe I should test another one and see if it's any better.

I have Bridgestones 205/55/16's on mine and find them noisy compared to the conti's i had on my mk7. I have also experienced Bridgestones on several other cars owned and always found them noisy.

Good Year EfficientGrip Performance 105/55R/16 on ours. Don't seem noisy.

    Mines on Michelins. 225/17.
Not sure which model they are. Had my car a week and it's been back in dealers almost 3 weeks. I think it is what is known as a lemon. Will be rejected next week if not sorted. Back to BMW I think for its replacement.
