    I know it's a common problem
Both my 55/57 plates have it
No joy with dealers as they dont admit who's fault it is
I removed the rust from my 55 plate last year 2019 I thought I did a good job
After a month it started to appear again
The 57 plate after getting the car last year appeared after 6 months
Question is if I get a new wing will it do it again
I believe it comes from the inside where the cover is

We have a 2010 as loan car and the right wing is breaking out very badly. Personally I think the excuse about the foam sound blocker being at fault is rubbish, the Octavia 1 front wings have this in all models and these don’t rust, I think it is movement between the arch liner and wing which frets away at the extremely thin paint.

There is a piece of sponge/plastic spacer on the inside that holds onto the water, hence the rusting.

If you get a new wing, take off the plastic spacer.

My 06 plate have this on both wings.

I think it is the arch liner moving that is the biggest cause and the VW paint being so thin, they depended on electro galv to allow them to massively reduce the amount of paint they used and its caused all sorts of problems, Golf 6 tailgates are a joke!

Thats very interesting about the Octavia. I always thought it was the foam as any Ive worked around are saturated in water and i throw them away.

I have seen Golf 5's with warranty replacement wings that have rusted through and the foam isn't there. If you think about it, the rest of the car is soaking most of the time but doesn't rust (well sort of) unless the pint is undermined, when you take the liner out, you can see where it rubs. On the Golf 2, 3 they had a rubber gasket to stop fretting.

My 3C2 has all of the arch liner bolts intact (I renewed the lot a while back) and there is zero movement between wing and arch liner...never has been and I have the same foam inside. I have solid non rusty wheel arches that are 14 years old.
