Does anyone know if VW have any plans at to make it so that I can disable Lane assist permanently.

    1. It's really quite annoying to be forced to disable it every time I start the engine, especially on a journey with multiple stops.
    2. It makes the steering feel heavy and less responsive.
    3. It tries to steer you back into lane when overtaking parked vehicles, its not much of a fight but its annoying as hell.

I get that it's a 'safety feature'. But It doesn't really work that well in the UK with its abundance of smaller roads with parked cars on it.
Ideally they should let me deactivate it permanently or maybe have it so that it engages at speeds of 40mph+?

I thought it only engaged over 30. I've got used to it now and don't find it much of an issue.

You'll be able to turn it off permanently with something like vcds but as it's listed as a safety feature I doubt they'll let it be done in the car.

Thanks. I'm not sure I can get used to it, I find the steering is so much more responsive without it.
I'm also of the viewpoint that I should have full control over the thing I'm paying thousands for

So , How do I go about pursuing this vcds avenue?

There's a VCDS users group on Facebook. Guess find someone local that can have a look? Maybe VW retrofit or someone like that would have a look too.

Problem is being a new car people might be worried about messing about with the coding.

Permanently disabling "safety" features is likely to be a total no no. The car is type approved with them active and also for Euro NCAP rating so disabling them would make the car "not as manufactured" and at the very least you would have to advise your insurer so as not to invalidate your policy. As of 2022 Lane Assist and many other features will become mandatory in the EU (and the UK even though we will have left) Press corner | European Commission Lane Assist is only active above 50km (38mph).

My son just got the new Audi A1 with lane assist, and can turn it off completely. It doesn't come back on unless he turns it on.

It's easy to turn off when you first start the car, just two buttons on the steering wheel.

Unfortunately it's not so straight forward on the Golf 8, its quite distracting if you forget to do it immediately and you're driving as its 1 button press followed by 2 on screen presses.

Two buttons on steering wheel to turn off lane assist whether driving or stationary.

1.Press button 1 and lane assist shows in instrument panel.
    2. Press button 2 to remove tick.
    3. Press button 1 again to take lane assist off screen.

I have done this from day one with my mk8 and never had to use touch screen to turn it on or off. Now i don't need to look at any screen to turn it off.

Thanks for the info.. I tried that as it sounds very handy,
However when I press button 1 all that happens is it message pops up saying travel assist activate/deactivated. It doesn't show anything with ticks.

I think we're talking about two different systems here - Lane Assist and Travel Assist.

Lane Assist (or, as the manual describes it, the Lane Keeping System) is a passive system which nudges the steering if the driver wanders out of lane. It operates above 60km/h (around 37mph) and is always switched on by default at start-up. When it is operating, the lane assist symbol appears on the virtual instrument display coloured green. If intervention is required, this symbol turns amber. In addition to the steering nudge, the system can oprionally be set to vibrate the steering wheel. This option is in the assist systems menu and can be found by touching an edge line when the picture of the vehicle is displayed on the infortainment screen.

Some cars are optionally fitted with Travel Assist. You will know if this is the case because the bottom right symbol on the left hand steering wheel control looks like this:
    Travel Assist.jpg

Travel assist is an active system. When you press the button the car is automatically steered within the lane markings. In addition, the adaptive cruise control is set. When travel assist is engaged, the symbol on the instrument display is a combination of the Lane Assist and ACC symbols. Travel Assist seems to operate at any speed (once the button is pressed). I find it works well, especially on motorways or well marked rural roads.

If Travel Assist is not engaged, then the Lane Assist system operates as described above.

As far as I can see, the method helpfully described by @Pinocchio to switch off lane assist does not work on cars equipped with Travel Assist because pressing the bottom right button simply engages Travel Assist.
