Been trying to figure out a few issues on the audi now it's passed its mot

    1.8t sport 1999 150bhp model

When car is started there is a very loud tapping noise if I turn the heater box to off so no air is blowing in the cabin the tapping automatically stops as soon as I turn it back on the tapping starts again. Noise is coming from the engine somewhere does anyone now first place to inspect.

Also I have a oil leak from the front off the engine fairly heavy any ideas what this could be also

    Thanks

The tapping sound could be the fan in the heater box touching its housing. Check if it still happens when you turn the heater on with the engine not running.

Regarding the oil leak, you'll have to look closer and find what area it's coming from. Maybe wipe off the oil as much as possible and use a strong light and a mirror, or put the lock-carrier (VW's name for the front end) in the service position for better access.

It's fine with engine off it's just when it's on. You turn the blowers on and then the rattle tap tap tap starts drowns the engine out.

The oil leak il have to investigate further I'm not sure what you mean by switching it to a inspection I know little about audi I'm still learning.

    I done a video but I can't upload it

I said nothing about "switching it to a inspection". What do you mean??

The first part of this video shows how to move the front end to the service position to give better access to the front of the engine.FKAutoWorks Audi A4 B5 1.8T AEB and ATW Timing Belt Instructional Video - YouTube

Does your car have air conditioning?

If so, what you refer to as the heater box also controls the air conditioning.

So, when you turn it on, the aircon compressor clutch may be engaging, and if it is gubbered, that is what could make a rattling noise.

Sorry I ment lock carrier I've no idea what this means. But thanks for video will have a watch later.

Car does have ac but it doesn't work due to a pipe that has a hole so it's never on.

When the blower is turned off the noise stops but when you turn it back on it get loud and starts tapping

    Hopefully video workshttps://cloud.tapatalk.com/s/5faed1fc...113_183504.mp4

My heating/aircon control display often shows the aircon compressor is on (a snowflake image) even though I have not selected it.

The evaporator in my system has burst, so I don't use the aircon. When I have a lot of spare time I may replace it, but it's a big job.

I have disconnected the wire to the low pressure switch, which is on an aluminium pipe on the LHS rear of the engine compartment, viewed from the front, to stop the compressor engaging.

Oh okay there's no sign that comes up on mine but would the switch be in the same location as mine so I can unplug it. As a temporary fix.

Another thing that's annoying is that the fan automatically goes up on the blower when I've set it to blow less it.

The LP switch on mine is to the LHS of the battery, looking from the front of the car, and has a grey plug with a grey and a black wire.

But if one of your aircon pipes has a hole in it there will be no gas in the system, and the LP switch should already be open.

My fan also sometimes decides to go to high speed, usually when the temperature inside the car is much higher than the set temperature.

e.g. when the car has been parked in the sun and gets very warm inside, but the temperature is set for a much lower value.

I just watched your video, in spite of the security warning I get when I click on the link.

Your control is different from mine, which shows a lot more information, but it sounds to me like a compressor running. You can possibly see whether this is so by removing the bottom engine cover and watching the compressor clutch, which should not be turning when the aircon is off.

It could also be the auxiliary electric fan behind the radiator, quite easy to see, if it is damaged or hitting something.
