I have a 1997 Passat B5 saloon 1.9TDi. The rubber seal around the boot opening is in poor shape. My local dealer gave me the part number and I was able to buy a new one off ebay. I have offered it up to the boot and it seems to be the same seal. Just getting twists and things out of it is a bit of a challenge.
I am an engineer by background, and I am fairly practical . . I can follow instructions and can figure out how many things should come apart (but often after I have damaged something that means I cannot reassemble it, like snapping off a plastic tab that was holding it in place)

    1. Before I start I am just wondering . . . does anyone know if the seal is glued in place or is a friction fit?

I do not want to start disturbing the existing seal until I am sure I have what i need to replace it, eg if I need some sort of adhesive.

Any advice or tips gratefully received.

    Thanks

I've never had to do it on a Passat B5/5.5 (despite looking after quite a few in the family over the years) but changing one on a Jaguar S Type was simply a matter of pulling it loose and fitting the new one in its place, no glue or sealant involved. I would imagine the Passat would be exactly the same.

Was getting something out of the boot of my B5.5 and remembered your question. Pulled off a length of the seal and yes, it's "friction fit", no glue, sealant or other nasties.

Thanks Ian, that is a great help. I had tried to ease mine off before posting, but just a little pull, no great effort and it did not move. But it has been there for 22 years, so perhaps not a surprise. Just waiting for a dry 1/2 day and I'll get the new one installed. I have a rubber mallet and a few plastic implements in case I need to ease something.
Big thanks for taking the trouble to reply and help.
    cheers,
