    Hello,

been having a good look through this forum and some great posters and some great advice so hopefully i can be on the receiving end of some.. as i really don't know what to do???? i have a 2008 tdi blue motion golf(wife car) couple months ago it blew a fuse a i lost the blowers, thought nothing of it really until i started to lose other things as well. i lost the front and rear washers, the tilting of the mirrors when reversing.
then yesterday i lost the instrument panel so speedo and everything else except the handbrake light went off? took it to a garage today and he hooked it up to his machine. informed me that the alternator was putting out about 25 volts and so the power surge has more than likely fried the panel and many other things as well. he said a new instrument panel was like a grand and a new alternator a couple of hundred quid, and that i could have to replace countless other things as it likey fried airbag etc as well.
has anyone else heard of this happening? as i find it hard to believe these things are not protected by a fuse? the car is in good condition and it would be a shame to scrap it, but if its going to cost £1500 to put right that may well be the case.

    any advice gratefully recieved thanks

A computer scan would be very helpful if you could get one done preferably Vcds.

When you say you lost the dash does absolutely nothing on the dash work except for the handbrake light?

What do you mean it blew a fuse and you lost the blowers? Do you mean you blew the blower fuse?

The blower fault is very common. This is where it works on setting 4 but not on 1,2 or 3. Don’t replace just the fuse as it’s normally the blower seizing up and will nearly always blow your new fuse. Replace both and save yourself the hassle. Second hand blowers off eBay or a scrapyard are fine. Make sure you match the part number as some of the plugs are different. You’ll know by how freely it spins when you removed it. It’s under the dash on the passenger side and not hard to remove.

    hi,

the lad in the garage plugged it into his diagnostic machine but i never received a print out. here is the strange thing........i removed the cluster to get a part number, came on here to ask advice....went out and put the cluster back in and it all works as it did????????? i then put a meter across the battery and its reading 13.5 v with the car running as normal?
with regards to the fans they do not work at all, but when the guy at the garage earlier had the fan on full and placed a new fuse in they worked and as soon as he switched them down it blew the fuse again. do you think this is just a case of a lose connection on the instrument panel and a massive coincidence???? or something more sinister? as i would like to believe that a so called audi/vw specialist could get the diagnostic so wrong. thanks for the advice.

So the cluster is all working fine now? If so leave it and see what happens as it’s definitely not fried. Don’t get too tied up on one big problem that may not exist. I’d try and fix the other problems and try and get a copy of a scan if possible. Also don’t stick with one garage unless you trust them 100%

The reason the fuse blew when he switched it down is because the blower is bad. If the blower isn’t working at all then it’s been unplugged or totally seized. The blower doesn’t need the fuse to work on setting 4 as there’s no resistance on that setting.

You can’t just switch a dash by the way as the ecu and keys have to be changed with it.

Also now the dash is working if you don’t have an airbag light then your airbags are fine.

When your pull your wiper stalk is there any noise from the water jet pump?

yes the cluster is working as it was before it went off. and no warning signs of any sort so thats a relief. i have removed the fan from under the dash and it moves freely but what your saying makes total sense so i will look for another. have no noise from the water pump front or rear when i pull the stalk, and the rear wiper doesnt work either.

AC voltage getting through from the alternator can give wierd symptoms.

Get another blower and match the part numbers. I think your original and new fuse are both blown so you’ll need another one of those. £7 on eBay search number 383573557128

Ref the washers and rear wiper have a read here....

Wiper relay - Mk5 General Area - MK5 Golf GTI

Hopefully it’s the relay and all the above will have two of your problems fixed.

A (voltage regulator) failure in the alternator can’t be ruled out yet but most of what’s stated in the original post are common golf 5 problems. If the failure in the dash comes back then a scan becomes very important.

amazing thank you, the symptoms for that other member sound exactly what i have so i will change the load reduction relay and hopefully that will cure it. hoping it controls the wing mirror tilt on reversing as well (don't really see the point of that if am honest). i have ordered a replacement blower and resistor . i do find it strange to have lost all these different things in quick succession but i am hoping that's it!!!! i will await the parts and keep you posted on any success, thanks again you've been really helpful.

Oh ok, is there anything particularly I should be looking out for? Thanks with regards to the voltage regulator in the alternator I mean? As could that explain why I'm having all these things happen at once? And the reason the guy at the garage saw the alternator output 25volts? Thanks
