    Hi
2009 passat and when I turn steering left or right there is a noise made that sounds like a spring noise for a second... Turn it further and another similar noise.
Inspected spring yesterday and doesn't appear broken.
I have a short video of the noise I can dm anyone if they could help me.
Wondering is strut mount failure is often or would even drop link make similar noise?

Could be a number of things, springs can move if held down by a smooth bearing mount, front drop links can twang as they are attached to the anti roll bar each side, even steering track rod ends can transmit sound through the inner rods and through the steering box. A worn ball joint is likely to knock not twang so would be a different sound. Bad bearings under the top mount can make noise when turning as it will be transmitted through the spring / strut. Passat top mounts are normally pretty robust and in a lot of cases the bearing ring that fits under the mount fails way before the top mount rubber and casing. In rare cases the rigid metal in the top mount has been distorted by impacts to the running gear or by drawing the strut in using the bolts which is a bad method of installation.

Mine sounded exactly like that when the top of the spring broke.

The last half turn of the spring broke off & speared through the mount bearing.

Was very difficult to see when on the car.

New spring & top mount fixed it.

Similar for us. It took a bright torch and some good peering to see the top end was fractured, not smooth.
