    1. I’ve had Passat b8 2015 tdi (engine model CRL) for 3 years now and she is just about to hit 40k miles. She is due a service and I’ve always done main dealer but they say it needs a service, dsg oil change and cam belt. I’m not arguing with any of that but is it time to stop using main dealer.
What effect will it have on resale if it’s not main dealer?
My brother is a Honda tech (20+ year exp) and is happy to do the work obviously no book stamp but will use genuine parts and keep receipts. He has asked me to find out some info first though. When changing dsg oil do you need ve diagnostics to put it into a service mode or is it a simple drain replace filter and fill? Second what specialist tools are needed for the cam belt change.

I guess a third would be I’m in the Halesowen area, if advised to go to a garage can anyone recommend a vag specialist that would be cheaper than main dealer.

      Thanks

My local garage wouldn't touch dsg oil change. Said they don't have the tools and don't want them as it's an expensive mistake if they get it wrong. Think it's £200 at the dealer.

What's the long term plan with the car? To be honest we've just traded the wife's golf in and they didn't give that sort of thing any thought at all

I want another couple of years from the car but I use for work too so needs to be reliable. I’ve a cam belt snap on a mondeo before at 55k miles and had to have the valves and 2 cams changed. That was due to be changed the following week so I got well angry but Ford didn’t want to know.

it sounds like the dealer for service and dsg oil change, keeps service history at dealer. Cambelt change seems expensive at dealer, with about £400 of the cost labour I would have thought 2-3 hours at most.

If you get a service plan it works out pretty cost effective with the dealer.

My water pump went at just over 3 years old. Long story short local Indy quoted £430 with Cambelt. VW did it for £440 but I had to argue! They wanted double that.
