My Audi A6 TDI suddenly stopped on the highway on saturday and doesn't start any more. I had it towed to a garage. Today they diagnosed the problem and told me that the timing belt failed. The solution I was given is as follows.

    1. Fix timing belt and water pump.
    2. Re time the engine.

This will cost me about £650. Once this is done, they will be able to find out if there is any engine damage or not. If there is engine damage, I may have to spend upto another £1000.

I am not sure why the timing belt failed as I have changed it only 40K miles ago and it has only been 3 years since the change. The car has 175K miles now. My car has been pretty reliable for 8 years now. I am currently not sure if I should keep spending it to fix it or to write it off as the car probably is not worth more than 2500 after fixing everything. Also it is due a service, mot and road tax payment in the near future.

What would you do in this case? Even if the engine is fixed somehow, would it start giving me problems in the future?

Is this the BRE engine you posted about before (and mentioned 155k miles when changing that belt - so it's even newer if so)?

When it stopped suddenly were there noises, smoke, etc? Or more of a silent, electrical type failure?

I think I'd ask them to take at least the water pump, turbo and engine top off to look for any obvious problems before replacing any parts.

Wow you figured out when I changed the timing belt . I guessed it was 140K as my log book is in the car...
When the car stopped, I felt a different kind of vibration and engine sound. No smoke. No electrical failure. Also when I turn the ignition to start the car it just keeps cranking even when I release the key. I had to turn off the ignition for it to stop cranking.
Also the tow truck driver said it could be something related to the fuel lines or fuel pump from his experience, but can't be sure.

I tried telling them that the timing belt was replaced not very long ago. But they said probably it wasn't done right and definitely needs replacing as it is in a bad state and the same one can't be put back.

The belt could easily have been damaged by the engine stopping suddenly. So it may well need replacing, but not in itself fix the original problem. BTW, £620 sounds a bit high for just replacing those parts, but may well include some non-standard timing rework, etc.

Do you recall if the starter motor fired up on the first ignition position, so no need to move it the extra click? That would make me wonder if it decided to do the same when you were driving, and hence messed up smooth running. Should be quite simple to take starter off bracket and test that it does what it should. If you find it is a stuck relay it'll potentially be a nice simple fix of the original problem (assuming it is relay itself rather than ECU wrongly telling it to be on), but not tell you what else has suffered.

Overall I'd still be wanting to check that the engine was free of any noticeable damage to major components before fitting new ones that will get damaged themselves or cause more trouble if they let things start smashing into each other again.

Thank you very much for the detailed reply. Starter did not fire on ignition position. I can hear the cranking when I turn the ignition, but the sound was different and not as loud compared to when it works. Also it does stop when I let go the key. I had to fully turn off the ignition.

I will talk to the garage today and pass on the advise.
