I've recently bought a 2001 2.0 8v (AQY) mk4 golf. I intend to modify as much as I can and maybe add a turbo down the line. I know what you guys are thinking, I shouldve just bought a 1.8T or I should sell the 2.0 for a 1.8T, I'm looking for real help not suggestions for a new car thanks. I'm kinda new to car modification so if you guys could give me a list of what I could do to the engine to create more power and make it faster. Money isnt an issue so any ideas are helpful, I'm looking to change the internals so it could handle a turbo. I'm looking to do more than just the standard intake and exhaust for NA engines. Thanks

This is a problem that dates back to the 1.8 20V none turbo GTI which was treated as a joke. VW’s solution was the lower power but higher torque 2 litre 8v which came in five different versions of which four were barley discernible from each other and one which was slightly different, the AZJ. The lack of power from this engine is basically incurable without added breathing, CC or forced injection and Neuspeed in the US addressed this with a supercharger which I flew to the US and reviewed for a magazine in 2001 and it was very effective but as soon as I looked at the installation I could see it was useless to us, the brake master cylinder got right in the way. Increasing the CC is possible upto 2.1 ish but does bugger all and a modified head with 41 and 35 mm valves helps but costs about £2k before you fit it, I have just supplied one to Bermuda but told them to not expect miracles. To add a turbo you will have to engineer the complete system from scratch although the Access denied gives you a head start by bolting upto the head and taking a T3... the rest is custom. Ignore the access denied link, it works.
