If it does become an issue, you can actually get companies that clean them now. Have a quick Google.. Most diesel cars these days come with a dpf.

My 2012 Golf's glow plug light came on yesterday for the first time in my ownership. Its on 191k miles and I bought it around 116k. I suspect it may be the first time for the car to have flagged a problem on the dash!

I think it was the Dpf (no obd codes stored when checked) and a quick 2 junction blast on the motorway seemed to sort it. Its the first time I have had to take it on a drive to regen the dpf. Normally my normal journeys have taken care of it but recently I have only used it on very short journeys in around town.

The dpf itself is a very useful filter when you consider it blocks all the soot particles you see being emitted from older diesels. The system does work well but needs a little knowledge on how to work with it. Like for example I knew yesterday beforehand that the dpf had been trying to regen for a few days but my stop start journeys this last week was not allowing it to.

The system can actually regen naturally (passive regen) given the right sustained driving over a few miles. If I ever have regen issues I plan to use one of the dpf regen liquids (this lowers the temp at which regen occurs) but have not had to do this yet.

As far as I know the system can regen whilst idling but not in town driving with lots of overrun.

So overall the dpf is a welcome reliable addition to pollution control if diesels are to be on the road but dpf equipped vehicles are not ideal for those who seldom use their vehicle and when they do its only to the local shops and back.

Also the potential costs of failed parts in the emissions and fuel systems is quiet high. I DIY my repairs but when I bought this vehicle my knowledge was about 15/20 years out of date. I got an inkling on potential faults a couple of years after buying so I have had to research quiet a few potential problems and get up to date on modern systems. Likewise some VAG owners actually also keep a vcds diagnostic interface worth about £400 just as a part of ownership to unlock and personalise gadgetry.

3 important things to do with VAG diesels of 2012 euro 5 era
    1) drive it
    2) use the right low saps oil, and change it before its due
    3) never change fuel filter without running in tank pump to prime the system back up
