I have a 2 litre petrol (Automatic) 2005 beetle which requires a cambelt and water pump, it's well overdue (10 years )but has only covered around 47,000 miles. It's had one belt change in it's life and water pump (which I struggled to get the dealer to change) and as I remember they didn't change the tensioner, just the belt.. Half a job. Anyway, I need to get it done now as I've been putting it off long enough and just looking at water pumps. Could anyone recommend a decent brand to go for please ? I'm thinking INA but I know some have a plastic Impeller and I've been advised to steer clear of those. I may have had an FAI pump before on another car but not sure If they are the best.

Also, Best quality belt kit ? Again, I'm thinking INA but open to suggestions ?

I've also got to get the Camshaft sensor changed as recently it hasn't been starting well and more recently the engine management light has been on. I've scanned it with VCDS and found "Camshaft Position Sensor (G40) Signal too high P0343-35-10 - Intermittent"

I've done a bit of research and it could be a failed cam seal leaking onto the sensor so I'll probably be looking for a cam seal also.

The next thing is, Do I tackle the job myself ? Done a few belts but not for years and not on a 2 litre VW so confidence is a bit low but it doesn't seem too bad a job to do.

    Many thanks people.
    Matt.

As modern VAG cars go it is the simplest cam belt job since the Golf 2 16v; they were so easy compared to this modern crap it is daft... ones without power steering could be done in an hour and the water pump was not involved! I would suggest a genuine VAG cam belt kit and water pump but most of the aftermarket kits are excellent, too many to list but INA is OE, Schaefller Group, there is nothing better on the aftermarket Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket

Cheers Crasher. I believe that INA are the same as you'd get from VW minus the branding but correct me if I'm wrong. I would rather use genuine but the cost puts me off seeing as though I'm not trade that's why I was looking into aftermarket.

It does seem straight forward enough of a job so I may tackle it myself. Got plenty of tools to hand just need to grow a pair lol.

    Thanks again
    Matt.

The kits genuine are very affordable, £96.18 for the belt kit and £67 for the water pump... correctly fitted and bought from a VW dealer these have a two year parts and labour warranty.

That doesn't sound too bad as long as that's retail of course. I'm going to need a sensor anyway and would only fit genuine for that anyway. Not worth fitting a Mickey mouse one for that job.

Yes that is retail over the counter at a VW dealer including VAT. For years we have only fitted genuine cam belt kits with water pump and never had an issue, then I did mine on my 1.8T and the bloody water pump leaks! Not taking it to a Skoda dealer though, the spotty oiks they would throw at it were at nursery school when the car was built.

Hi Crasher. I got the parts today from VW As you suggested. One thing that worries me a bit is the water pump, as feared it has a plastic impeller. I questioned it and they said that is the latest type and can only get that one. If I want a metal impeller I'd need aftermarket. I've gone with genuine but should I be worried ? Many thanks

The plastic impeller problem is massively over hyped, I have not seen a case of failure in years.
