    Hi all,

I'm currently a Passat estate owner, but that car is about to give up the ghost (gearbox gone - too expensive and problematic to replace it), so I'm thinking of buying another car. In particular, I'm thinking about a Skoda Octavia estate.
I've seen a 4x4 2002 model for sale, and this looks like it will fit the bill.
My partner has a thing about Octavias though: she has this memory of looking at one the last time we were buying a car, and recalls that the boot had just a flimsy hardboard panel for the parcel floor instead of a metal or plastic floor. Personally, I think she's got it confused with another car we looked at at the same time (probably a Nissan, if I remember correctly).
My current Passat's boot floor is metal, with a plastic cover over the spare wheel tray.

Can anyone who owns this generation of Octavia estate clarify what the boot floor is made of? I can't find any mention of it in any archived reviews online.
(Yes, I know I could just look at the car, but I'm currently without transport, so don't want to make the trip to the dealer until I am reasonably certain that this is the right car.)

Yes it is a flimsy piece of moulded card, I cut myself a new one out of marine ply. Otherwise the Octavia 1 estate is an amazingly durable car, mine has nearly done 200k miles and I am currently subjecting him (Brian, Mrs C named him that) to a full running gear rebuild and 6 speed gearbox conversion.

Thanks for the info. That sounds like what I'd do if I had one, too.
We use our current estate for lugging rubbish, debris and garden waste up to the tip, fetching furniture and equipment and carting musical gear around, so it's going to get a lot of abuse! However, we've seen some good prices on second hand Octavias, and given that they don't have the electronic handbrakes that the Passat B6 and above seem to have, I'm starting to favour the Skodas over the VWs.

Right - I've gone and bought a 2005 Octavia Elegance!
I'm still worrying that I've done the wrong thing though: despite my assumption that the Octavia is basically a Passat with different trim, I've realised that it feels like a competely different car to drive. The wheels are smaller, the cabin is more cramped. The visibility is not as good, due to the smaller windows all around. I feel cocooned when I'm in it.
Maybe I'll get used to it. . .
The luggage bay does have a flush floor, which is a real bonus: no more lifting heavy stuff over the sill! But I discovered that whereas I used to put my bass's flight case across the wheel arches on the Passat, I can't do this on the Octavia, as the more elaborate luggage cover is right on top of the arches.
However, this one is ULEZ-compliant, which means when Birmingham introduces its Clean Air Zone in a few months, at least I can still drive to the studio. So that's a load off my mind. The car's been in the wars a bit, but I don't mind the bashes and scratches. My last car was immaculate when I bought it and I was very upset the first time it got a big scratch (and when I dinged the door when it opened onto a skip's hook. . .).

The Octavia 1U is not based on the Passat 3B platform, it uses the PQ34 platform which is used for cars such as the Golf 4, Bora, New Beetle, Leon 1, Toledo 2, A3 8L and TT 8N.
