Are there any other Sharan owners out there using their car as a pretend VW camper?!

With most of the seats taken out it's fairly spacious, especially when the tailgate awning is attached. I left in seat No 3 because I sometimes use the car to transport my grandchildren around. Also, once folded down it's useful as an extra table. (Mine is a 2009 so seats removed, as they don't fold flat in this model)

I'm try to find someone friendly and helpful with a bandsaw to cut a shaped bed-top that I can lay on top of storage boxes, for sleeping on. Also, my local garage is going to work out a way for me to access the door latch on the tailgate so that it can be opened from the inside.

Being a pensioner, I'm camping on a shoestring, so trying to reuse and recycle stuff as much as possible. If anyone else camping with a Sharan can tell me what they've done to modify their car that would be really helpful - you may have ideas that hadn't occurred to me! Thanks.

I'm wondering if there are any points along the sides that you could install a par of approx 30mm x 200mm "joists" to, and then lay a number of slats across the van from. Just like a typical pine bed. It would be a lot more compact when not it use, and easier / lighter to fit / remove.

EDIT: Like this sort of thing: OBW Chunky Pine Bed Frame. The side timbers could use shaped pieces of 1" ply cut to go over wheel arches or similar to give a firm location. Top of them with little chunks of wood glued and pinned like a traditional castle wall shape so that the cross pieces drop in quickly and securely. Sides need to be wide enough so that when cross pieces bend and so get a bit shorter left-to-right they don't fall out.

Thanks for the link. Thinking a bit more about this, I may visit a camper/caravan breaker as I'm sure there must be plenty of bed bases available that would just need some shaping down one side to fit around the curve where the two rear seats normally fit. - Bearing in mind I'm not very good at DIY and have no tools apart from those my neighbour lets me borrow!

By the way, looking at the list of similar threads, and their dates, there aren't many people on the forum using the Sharan as a camper!

There are a few on Pintrest, etc. I think its a very sensible idea for minimising exterior bulk and fuel use if you can make the interior space work. I saw one clever idea where there were drawer type systems to pull out from under the bed at rear of vehicle with cooking hob in it. I'd be wary of the fire hazard, but seems like a nice way to be able to pull up and have dinner on almost straight away.

Thanks VAG-Abound. I have hopes of building a bed base with space beneath for storage though I wouldn't keep the gas stove there!

Yesterday I went down to a caravan breaker in Devon to look at the bedbases that had come out of scrap caravans, but they were all too big, heavy and cumbersome, and not easily adaptable as the framework was made of metal. The proprietor showed me a bedbase still insitu in a not-yet-dismantled caravan which would have been ideal - smaller than the others, wooden and quite lightweight. However he didn't want to sell a single unit so I couldn't buy it unless I was prepared to buy the other one of the pair.

    Back to square one then!

I've thought about this with my Touran. With all rear seats removed, and a space saver spare, plenty of room for 2 to sleep. Wonder if anyone makes a pop up roof?

I bought my Sharan (2006) so I could use it as a Van (musician gig gear transportation), a camper (festivals) and a regular car, the back sleeps two people with all seats out... very handy.

The Sharan/Alhambra/Galaxy 1 was often used for conversion into disabled transport with rear conversions to take extra weight so talking to a disabled car specialist may unearth a time expired Sharalraxy 1 with some useful parts.
