Symptom: Car starts well but immediately after starting there is a loud screeching vibrating noise from the starter motor for about 1-2 seconds (enough to wake the neighbours). Today I removed the starter and tested it expecting to see some wear or slow retraction of the pinion. It all looks good though. Bendix snaps out rapidly and snaps back strongly once the power is removed.

So i thought, maybe the starter switch. Tested that. Power to solenoid goes off immediately the key is let go. So that gets a tick.

I have a look at the bendix gear. A bit worn but no obviously major fault. Had a feel around the ring gear on the flywheel. A bit worn too. Little sharp in places on the outer edge. I doubt this is preventing disengagement as would be sloppy if anything.

So finally i am out of my depth and stumped. The whole car cost around £750 so don’t really want to start replacing parts ar random.

I’m merely hoping someone on the forum has had a similar issue and can point me in the right direction.

If not, then many thanks for bothering to read my post anyway!

Something settling down on the flywheel maybe? We get a screeching noise at certain revs / gears that I'm told is the DMF not being very happy.

They do it, my Octavia 1.8T goes through phases of it, replace the motor or keep annoying the neighbours. I am converting my car to six speed so I am fitting a new starter.

Thanks for your replies. This morning I noted that the starter makes the same noise after letting go the key, even if you don’t turn the engine long enough to actually start. So I am coming back around to seeing this as definitely a fault with the starter itself. Bearings?? Or maybe the motor keeps running after the bendix is disengaged. From the sound it is worn out anyway. Will probably replace in due course.

    Many thanks again
