Hi, I have a 2004 A8 D3 and the remote key fob often does not work. I have changed the key battery plenty of times but the car is still showing on the dash sometimes that the key fob battery needs to be replaced.

It seems though that the car 'forgets' the key. If I unlock the car by using the key in the drivers door lock, and then turn the key on and off in the ignition lock then it will normally work again once or twice, but then a few minutes later the remote does nothing again.

I only have one key for the car so I don't have another to test with it. Does anyone a rough cost for a replacement key? I've heard that a8 keys are dealer only, are there any cheaper options? I'm near Birmingham UK.

Maybe worth your while making sure the kessy module hasn’t got wet.
As far as I’m aware there is an issue whereby water gets in somewhere and makes its way into the passenger footwell.
The kessy module is under the passenger seat.

    Do you have keyless entry?

Sorry I thought I'd mentioned that, no there's no kessy. It does definitely feel like the car falls asleep though, the key pretty much always works immediately after I've unlocked the car and put the key in the ignition.

My alarm does not sound after and I know the alarm module batteries fail after a while (the car is 16 years old so it's to be expected!) and that causes the battery to run down. I wonder if the bems is seeing this and shutting down whatever should be listening for the key?

My problem with checking this is that the alarm module is hidden behind an lpg conversion so it's going to be really hard to even unplug it let alone replace it.
