I went to have a look at a 2003 passat estate pd130 (5 speed) yesterday and I noticed that 1st gear seemed pretty slow and would only rev up to 3.5k with foot flat to the floor but every gear after that seemed fine with plenty of power and you get it well past 4k why is this the car hasn't been used very much over the last couple of years so I was told

That is the AWX engine. First of all get a code read done and deal with any faults that come up such as under/over boost. If there are no relevant codes, fit a new genuine VW Air Mass Meter bought from a VW dealer, DO NOT fit an aftermarket unit of any type, Bosch included as there are a huge number of Chinese made forgeries out there.

Thanks for the reply my problem is I can't get it plugged in because I haven't actually bought the car yet so I was just wanting to know if its potentially a big problem because I don't want to start spending a load of money on it just after I've bought it

Maybe, maybe not... no way of knowing without a code read.
