    Hi all,

Bought a Polo 6R, & have realised the engine coolant has been filled with pure water it seems. Has been a few months like this, so i am wondering what's the best procedure for a full drain?

I have access to a ramp so can get under the car. I know I can remove the lower radiator hose & open the lid on the coolant header tank, and drain it that way, but will this remove all or nearly all of it? I want it to be realistically be a full flush or as close to, so I can add some G12/G13 coolant to the tank.

    Thank you all
    Ji

I would air flush it out but dropping, refilling 50/50 and then again a few days later should be sufficient.

Does that mean using like compressed air or something to push out the coolant through the header tank?

Also, when you say do it again a few days later, do you mean a complete flush again, i guess to remove any last sediments etc. that would be floating around?

    Thanks Crasher.

If it is contaminated we drain and catch the coolant and then blow through with compressed air (wearing a mask, airbourne antifreeze is not nice) and then reverse flush with the pressure washer but if it is clean then drain (don't dump) and refill.

    Understood.

I haven't really checked if it looks contaminated but will see. What about using a coolant flush like Holts speedflush to help? Just trying to use readily available stuff.

Do you have access to a Haynes manual where if you can tell me if the Polo 6R has a drain tap/plug? I haven't had a chance to look but someone said they do but I've seen no indication of this.

    Thanks

Hardly any VAG cars have a drain plug now, you pull off the bottom hose in almost all cases. You only need a flush chemical if the system is contaminated, if it is clear water just wash it out and refill and do it again a few days later if you are worried. Really the only modern VAG car to suffer side effects from dirty coolant is anything on the MQB platform such as the Golf 7, I have never know a heater matrix to clog so easily... “my heater doesn’t work” has now become an annual seasonal cry at work with the Golf 7, A3 8V etc. Actually it is September now so I must stock up on MQB heater matrices.

Right, understood. I will have to double check the contamination as I feel like the previous owner didn't look after it much, but I'm learning as it's my 1st car, and hahah.

Well must be good for business atleast. On that topic, will removing the Lower radiator hose drain whatever coolant may be in the heater core etc?

Just pulling the bottom hose will only get around half the approx six litres out, you have to use air to flush the rest but not at high pressure at the matrix can burst.

    Got it.

Well I don't have access to air to do that unfortunately but I really need to get rid of the tap water that's in there.

Good decision. Will probably try to do in such a way. The only thing I need is pressure washer but I think it is not a problem to buy.
