    Hi all,

    Link to Video

Recently had a metallic clanking noise which was more apparent when steering. Was caused by a totally shot track rod end. Replaced that but there is still some kind of noise.

I've crawled under the car whilst jacked up and had a solid yank on every suspension component and can't find any noticable play. I even used a pry bar. I did notice the drive shafts have some play laterally and make a noise but the movement and sound is the same on both sides so I'm thinking it's normal and it's to allow tolerance with the suspension but I just wanted to double check.  Still trying to figure out the suspect. I've tried bouncing the car on the ground to simulate the noise. Tried hitting the tyre with hammer while jacked up to simulate a pot hole or bump. No luck as of yet.Thank you

I had that and it turned out to be the alternator. There is some sort of clutch mechanism on the pully that seizes and for some reason it is more noticeable when steering. New pully fitment and good as gold.

It could be that, have an assistant turn the steering lock to lock and watch the poly V belt tensioner to see if it rattles back and forth. This used to be an extremely common problem but with the increasing use of electric power steering it is much less of a problem.

I'll try this, where can I find the V belt tensioner located? is this just the auxiliary belt?

Sweet cheers for the pic, yeah that's the pulley I had in mind. Last MOT advised aux belt noisy which I'm assuming because maybe that pulley is rubbing abit on something🤷. Should I do the test you suggested while the car is running ?

Also what kind of rattle should I be looking for? Like as if the pulley was a buckled wheel for example? Wobbling.

With the engine idling, on full steering lock the pulley shouldn’t move around a great deal, if it does it suggests the one way pulley on the alternator has failed.
