    Hi all,

I have a Golf GT 160 from 2012 which has been really well looked after and I've enjoyed very much. I stopped taking it to the VW dealer for servicing a couple of years ago because they were awful and expensive (Arnold Clark) and found a good "ordinary" reliable and cheap local garage. They've been really good, and are handy.

I put it in for an overdue (due to covid) service last week, and they discovered 3 broken springs - none of which I'd noticed... When they phoned to tell me this, I told them that this model had the slightly lowered sports suspension, and were they sure they were ordering the right springs? He said they just put in the registration plate and it tells them what to order... which made me nervous straight away.

Anyway its back, and it seems fine, and at least it would pass an MOT now, but I spotted the part number on a front spring - SUPLEX 39202. After a bit of investigation, I'm certain this is the standard spring from the 80PS car. I found the Suplex catalogue online. The one I should have looks like the SUPLEX 39332

Most people would never notice, and I'm sure it will be fine to drive, and I'm not sure I'll notice any difference. Car is only worth about £4k now, but its irritating me. What would you do?

I was about to buy a newer GTi back in March to replace it, but have put that on hold for various covid-related reasons, so I suppose I might have the car for a while now.

I also need the reg to check but I use the VIN to ascertain the spring using ETKA FI Suggestion and the cars build PR codes to give me the VW OE number and then use Tec Doc to cross reference, direct reg look up is risky. The only aftermarket springs I will fit are Suplex but the supply is erratic with the new UK distributor. The Suplex number cross references to a VW 1k0 411 105 AJ which fits a lot of PQ35 platform VW, Audi and Skoda's but not any Seats. It is marked 1 x blue, 1x orange and 1x green OR 1 x grey and 3 x white and is for cars with PR-2UA+L01 suspension which is standard suspension for the lightest front axle weight of 621>650kg, i.e. completely wrong.

I'm going to DM you and politely ask if you can look mine up to confirm please! Then I'm going to ask them to fit the correct ones.
I've just driven it to the Highlands of Scotland on roads I'm familiar with, it feels ok, it feels safe, but definitely not as firm and planted as it was.

Oh God, a CAVD engine... you have my sympathies. The front springs are OE 1K0 411 105 AT (Suplex 39332) at £108.37 inc VAT and the rears are 1K0 511 115 GC at £90.31 inc and Suplex do not list this spring.

Thanks very much for your reply, its appreciated.

I'm going to get them to fix the car properly, and then I'm going to try to sell it privately, and then buy a 2016/17 Golf GTI- I presume the engine in these is less traumatic for you guys? It'll go to a main vw dealer initially, then a vw specialist, I've learned my lesson.

For information, for anyone else reading this, the car felt fairly hopeless on twisty mountain roads - compared to how it used to be. However around town you couldn't tell the wrong springs were fitted.
